In regards to the 12/21/12 24-hour playlist, I’ve given it a full drive so far until the end of the Dream section. I haven’t been reduced to tears *yet*, but this is extremely heavy listening. I’ll continue until it’s 11:59pm in Honolulu. Please start listening at any time.

The full 24-hour thing (actually, 24 hour and one second) is here on Rhapsody. Start playing anytime: http://www.rhapsody.com/members/mackromackro/playlists/mp.168327270

For Spotify listeners, user and friend Jody Beth Rosen has created as close to a replica of the track list as possible here. It’s a vast majority of it: http://open.spotify.com/user/grannykart/playlist/2xnedHHGaPtZlwW2SMXlyN

…and the remainder that could not be found on Spotify is in its own leg here, chosen by Jody: http://open.spotify.com/user/grannykart/playlist/1yEmoEPDHf5zC7WCVoShFx

Many thanks to Jody for quickly Jodifying this playlist, especially since it was the playlist equivalent of transcription.

Fix to 12/21/12 24-hour playlist

I removed The Power Station’s “The Heat Is On”, since it was erroneously stated as the final track of The Power Station. The song is replaced with the actual final track, “Still In Your Heart”, from the same self titled album.

I moved this new addition down between Duran Duran and Cut Copy, so the ‘Last Dance’ section is now short one song. This gives the bartender in that scenario time to shout “LAST CALL” now.

This was a simple “clicked one-off” error, when selecting it and sequencing it. Now the playlist is 24:00:01 instead of 23:59:59.

I knew this a while back, so I figure I would try out, as an experiment, another obsessive music/playlist related project:

* Create a 24-hour playlist of loosely themed doomsday songs, each the final track of its album, based on original album release — one primary artist per song.

One night, at a weekly DJ gig I have here in Seattle, I discovered accidentally that a stream of 5 songs I played in a row happened to be the final songs of their respective albums. I hate to toot my own selection horn, but this stretch of music was really powerful to me. I tried it again with different songs on a different night, and — once again — it was a powerful feeling, although different than the first.

With the upcoming Internet Joke That Became The End Of The World On December 21st, 2012 that was coming quickly, I went to work to help make that day a little more meaningful for me and my friends. I chose a streaming service, Rhapsody, to construct the above playlist — as it would be very easy to share, without dealing with some of the library limitations that Spotify has, for example.

So for those of you who have Rhapsody accounts, just click on the link and start playing! Preferably, start it at midnight on December 21st, 2012, obviously. (The playlist is sequenced to start at midnight and end just as December 21st ends.)

If you don’t have a Rhapsody account, I provided the track list for you below, so you can construct the experience for yourself, with the obvious freedom to change any of the tracks or rules you want.

I hope this playlist destroys you as it has destroyed me.

EDIT #1: I replace a song by The Power Station, as it was not the actual final track. This has been fixed now. The replacement has been moved down the playlist a bit. This now reflects the latest… until the next mistake is found.

LAST DANCE:
1) The Clash - “Train In Vain” — the final unlisted track from the double album London Calling.
2) Frankie Valli - “Grease (Reprise)” — the final track from the album soundtrack Grease.
3) Electric Light Orchestra - “Don’t Bring Me Down” — the final track from the album Discovery.
4) The Human League - “Don’t You Want Me” — the final track from the album Dare.
5) Electric Six - “Synthesizer” — the final track from the album Fire.
6) Killing Joke - “Eighties” — the final track from the album Night Time.
7) Sheila E - “The Glamorous Life” — the final track from the album The Glamorous Life.
8) Lady Gaga - “The Edge Of Glory” — the final track from the album Born This Way.
9) Kano - “I’m Ready” — the final track from the album Kano.
10) Erykah Badu - “Honey” — the final unlisted track from the album New Amerykah Part One (4th World War).
11) Public Enemy - “Fight The Power” — the final track from the album Fear Of A Black Planet.
12) Front 242 - “Welcome To Paradise” — the final track from the album Front By Front.
13) Donna Summer - “Sunset People” — the final track from the double album Bad Girls.
14) Renegade Soundwave - “Can’t Get Used To Losing You” — the final track from the album Soundclash.
15) Culture Club - “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me” — the final track from the album Kissing To Be Clever.
16) Wham! - “Careless Whisper” — the final track from the album Make It Big.
17) Spandau Ballet - “True” — the final track from the album True.
18) War - “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” — the final track from the album Why Can’t We Be Friends?.
19) The Go-Go’s - “Can’t Stop The World” — the final track from the album Beauty and The Beat.
20) INXS - “Don’t Change” — the final track from the album Shabooh Shoobah.
21) Olivia Newton-John - “Xanadu” featuring Electric Light Orchestra — the final track from the album soundtrack Xanadu.
22) Queen - “Under Pressure” featuring David Bowie — the final track from the album Hot Space.
23) Prince & The Revolution - “Purple Rain” — the final track from the album soundtrack Purple Rain.

GO HOME:
24) The Zombies - “Time of the Season” — the final track from the album Odessey & Oracle.
25) Elvis Presley - “In The Ghetto” — the final track from the album From Elvis In Memphis.
26) Emerson, Lake & Palmer - “Lucky Man” — the final track from the album Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
27) T.
When the video for LaTour’s first single “People Are Still Having Sex” arrived, it already felt pushed by the new Mainstream Industrial Dance Zeitgeist. The single was terrible — aloof and confrontational to no result.

However, thanks to college radio and — in southern California to the arrival of MARS FM — the second single “Allen’s Got A New Hi-Fi” was much better suited for airplay and the clubs.

I disagree with the claims on LaTour’s author of its/his Wikipedia page that the former was a hit, and the second was a failure. Neither are particularly remembered, but the former certainly wasn’t a hit, and never a one-hit wonder. But I still occasionally hear the latter on occasion, for good reason.

Sure, “Allen’s Got A New Hi-Fi” is New Beat/Nitzer Ebb Lite, but it’s a great song! The church organ in the middle gives the song a vital layer. The vocals are dumb but at least catchy.

This is how most guys in Seattle bars converse…

This is how most guys in Seattle bars converse…

OUR SEAL COULD BE YOUR MOOG

OUR SEAL COULD BE YOUR MOOG

Oregon Promises “Way Superior” Gay Marriage Bill...

Oregon Promises “Way Superior” Gay Marriage Bill Than Lame, Boring Washington State

February 1st, 2012

PORTLAND - In an impromptu press conference Wednesday night following the Washington state Senate’s passing of a marriage equality bill, Oregon governor John Kitzhaber praised his home state of Washington for “doing the right thing when American needed it”, however he followed his compliment with a challenge to the malaise-ridden, lame-o Washington state.

“You call that a marriage equality bill, Washington [state]? You think your gay citizens eating those tender little piroshkis in Pike Place Market on the weekends is going to make you look better than Oregon? Well, these blue jeans have other things coming down the ‘Pike’, if you will.”

Kitzhaber proposed a new bill for the House called “Oregon Citizens Super Equalified.” The bill would allow same-sex and transgender couples to marry as heterosexual couples do. However, OCSE would additionally allow a new family provision called “super marriages.”

A “super marriage” would allow any two married couples to marry their marriages.

“If marriage is, in the words of [weirdo Washington state] Senator Ed Murray, what defines American families”, continued Kitzhaber, “then we should conversely allow families to be defined as other families, too.”

Portland mayor Sam Adams, joining Kitzhaber at the press conference, provided more details for the OCSE bill. “Not only do we want Oregonians to marry whomever they want, we want their marriages to have that same freedom. And most importantly, we will make those Blaah-shingtonians up north jealous as hell of Oregon. And this is what matters most to this great state.”

However, opponents to the bill had weighed in immediately with e-mails sent to the local press at the conference. “I don’t think this bill will accomplish its goal nor enrich the lives of anybody in Oregon,” said Kitzhaber’s 2010 gubernatorial opponent and former NBA player Chris Dudley. “So-called ‘super’ marriages are only going to make that gaping waste of space between us and British Columbia laugh at us.”

To everyone’s surprise, Oregon anti-gay activist Lon Mabon provided some bipartisan support for the proposed OCSE bill. “Just the idea of two people who love each other but have different parts is immoral enough. And these super-marriages will not be tolerated by our proud anti-lesbionic citizens. But if anything can make those crappy Windows-makin’, digital-smut-peddlin’, flabby-vegan-doughnut-eatin’, latté-enema-havin’, not-havin’-booze-at-strip-clubs-goin’ sickos of the state of Washington state, I will cross lines and stand by my fellow blue-jean wearing MAN!”

My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2011-12-25)

My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2011-12-25):
