Negativland - “Time Zones” (from 1987’s Escape From Noise)
“Time Zones” is still the standard by which all quality cut-up pieces have to surpass or just meet in order to stand the test of time. Escape From Noise was an important gateway album for me in high school because while I was heavily immersed in music that made heavy use of samples, this album provided the blueprints and dared you, the listener, to try it yourself.
As a result, I used my boombox to tape vinyl records onto cassettes, and used the pause button to extend these songs I liked into ridiculously long custom extended versions.. 15 minute re-edits. Without Negativland, I’d have no idea where my mind would have gone musically. I’m definitely not alone. Ask several electronic musicians today, be it dance, experimental, or both.
