Bald eagle on Lake Washington (14) (by Mary)
The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a large bird of prey particularly common to the Pacific Northwest, though they were very recently considered endangered in the United States. Though these sea eagles prefer nesting in old-growth, mature stands of fir or hardwood trees, they have adapted to the tree-friendly culture of the Seattle area, and can often be seen roosting in unusual places.
Aurora Borealis is a controversial pair of sculptures installed in 2002 around the west end of the Evergreen Floating Bridge (SR-520), in the Montlake marsh. They replaced the older, better-loved, and similarly abstract Nellie Cornish memorial sculptures.
